Pending Federal Legislation Regarding
Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods

Members of Congress have three active bills for the labeling of genetically engineered foods:

S.809 and H.R.1699 were introduced simultaneously, and contain the same language. Both require the MANDATORY labeling of genetically engineered foods.

Almost a year later, on April 9, 2014, H.R. 4432 was introduced. This bill, referred to as the DARK Act,  (Deny Americans the Right to Know), will preempt state labeling bills, forbid the FDA from requiring labeling, codify the failed voluntary labeling system and define “natural” food to include GE ingredients.

For additional information about S.809 and H.R. 1699, please see:

NH’s CALL to ACTION:

NH is rather unique. Three of our four members of Congress have supported either the House or the Senate bill as co-sponsors. (In the US House of Representatives, both of NH’s Representatives support labeling. Vermont only has one Rep, and he is a co-sponsor, as are both Representatives from Maine.)

Recommended Action for NH Citizens:

1. Sign and share the petition that will be presented to all members of Congress:
http://www.credomobilize.com/petitions/tell-congress-don-t-prohibit-gmo-labeling?akid=10427.7506310.W8OitY&rd

2. Contact Senator Kelly Ayotte, and ask her to co-sponsor S.809, and demand (nicely!) that she not support H.R. 4432.

You may also contact Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Representative Carol-Shea Porter and Representative Ann Kuster. Thank them for supporting MANDATORY GMO labeling.

3. Please see additional the petitions and letters, below.
